Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has called for an increase in land under irrigation to improve agricultural productivity and boost farmers' earnings.
Speaking during an inspection of the Sh258 million Kanyuambora irrigation project in Mbeere North on Wednesday, March 26, Kindiki said expanding irrigation is central to the government’s strategy for food security and economic growth.
“Revitalising agriculture for better productivity and higher returns for farmers requires a steep increase in land under irrigation,” noted Kindiki.
He noted that the government is committed to supporting smallholder farmers through infrastructure investments that will mitigate the effects of erratic weather patterns and reduce reliance on rain-fed farming.

Newly nominated Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, alongside officials from the National Irrigation Authority, accompanied Kindiki during the visit.
Ruku said the project aligns with the government's broader agenda to modernise agriculture.
Officials from the National Irrigation Authority said the project is progressing well and will play a key role in supporting farmers and enhancing food security in the region.
