Police in Pipeline estate rounded up more than 20 people among them a Chinese national for operating illegal betting shops.
“We will arrest anyone found in these illegal premises,” said Constable Patrick Kihagi, adding that they will not spare even foreigners in their crackdown.
He warned youths against gambling, saying it encourages laziness.
“We know this is December, but we cannot allow the youth to engage in unlawful businesses,” he said.
Some of the youths told The Nairobian: “We cannot stop gambling. This is the only way one can get money.” They urged the government to create jobs first before moving to abolish betting.
With many idle youths, Embakasi has become a betting estate with cyber cafes and betting premises registering many numbers compared to churches and supermarkets.
