Kenyan Embassy paid Togolese driver Sh8 million out of court

 Kenyan Embassy in France

The other four sacked foreign nationals at the Kenya embassy in France include Nigerian Easter Deh, the confidential secretary to the ambassador. She had served for 30 years and was allegedly forced into retirement. Another sacked employee is from the Philippines and only identified as Jackline. She was a house help who had worked for seven years.

A Togolese by the name of Adre, was a driver. His case was settled out of court after the embassy agreed to pay him £65,000 (around Sh8 million), while the fourth employee is Ghanaian Clement Anokwe, a utility driver, who had served for 15 years. It is claimed that the embassy indicated that his position was redundant only to fill it two weeks later.

Ambassador Salma Ahmed and her deputy Nyambura Kamau have been accused of firing the seven without valid reasons. In protest letters to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Foreign Affairs CS, Kinuthia says the sackings were nonprocedural.

“There is also a worrying issue surrounding the unlawful dismissal of three Kenyan staff who have served the mission for between 20 and 25 years. The embassy has rendered them illegal immigrants and has not even paid their dues after sacking them. One of them received her sacking letter when sick and is still hospitalized as a result of this dismissal.

Another received hers when she was still out of office on forced leave,” read a letter to President Uhuru. The letter was authored on December 2, 2015 after the President attended the 21st session of the Conference of Parties (COP21). Kinuthia wrote to Uhuru a follow-up letter on March 16, 2016, prior to the president’s visit to Paris in April.
