#MCM: Dufla - From singing to cows to ruling the African airwaves

Celebs 101

Upcoming dancehall musician 25-year-old David Longoji popularly known as Dufla, developed a passion for music at a tender age of five.

According to the singer, he would always compose songs for the only bull Losogol, given to him by his father in regard to its shape, colour and the horns. The chorus would be simple in order to lure fans and enable them sing along to it easily.

Your song Tempo has been the talk of town?

By now you are already aware that Tempo has achieved a continental recognition. There is no doubt that I made history on this. It only shows that Kenya’s hip hop has come of age.

Why did you chose to work with singer Cindy from Uganda for the remix- whose idea was it?

Cindy is one talented singer. After doing some soul searching together with the CEO of grandpa Records Refigah we felt she was the ideal musician I could partner with.

Rumor has it that owing to the collabo the two of you have become an item?

Well, people will always find something to talk about it could be negative or positive especially when someone is doing well – which is normal. Truth is, Cindy and I are just good friends.

What makes you different from the rest?

I believe I tell it as it is. With the changing trends in music I strive not to let my fans down and that is why I give out my best during shows.

To achieve this I practice and rehearse wherever I am. I always give my performance intensity before I step on the podium. And the results are amazing. In other words, I’m a self-conscious artist with a style that is diverse, unique and original.

What is the inspiration behind your songs?

My songs are inspired by everyday life happenings. Besides I live for my fans and family. Whenever I wake up I ask myself if my fans would be comfortable listening to the new song I am drafting.

Will they be inspired or dejected with the lyrics and that is why I inject my numbers with the message of humour and hope for the coming generation.

In what ways has your newest music changed from when you first started?

I have improved all around as far as my music, songwriting and myself as a person goes. When I first started I just wanted to make music, but I didn’t know much about anything so I made what I heard other musicians making.

I couldn’t really be myself because I didn’t know who I was. Now, I know a lot more and I am more confident in my ability to write and record my lyrics. My music has become a part of my lifestyle and not necessarily a hobby anymore.

I feel like I have to make music just like I have to sleep. The music has changed, but it’s because the lifestyle and thinking behind the music has changed drastically as well.

What are your future plans as far as music goes?

I want to inspire upcoming young musicians through my music by making them realize that nothing is impossible in achieving their goals in life as long as they are determined to do so.

I am that living example…. a simple youth from Baragoi who made it despite the many life obstacles that stood my way. All they need to do is focus on their goal, go for it, work hard at it through patience and perseverance besides never giving up and they will be able to achieve their dreams.
