Wardrobe Wednesday: Give fashionably this Christmas

Local News

Clearing closet

By Sheila Kimani (@sheilakimm)

Most wardrobes are full, crammed up and often disorganized because we often think about how much we still need an outfit despite now wearing it for months.

Quick survey revealed that the reason why most people will not ditch their ‘unnecessary wardrobe’ staple is because of the sentimentality with which they remember ‘how happy getting the outfit made them’.

Others remember what they forewent, and how long it took them to get the ‘stunning’ outfits, and then there is the lot that always feels great seeing a full wardrobe whenever they check into their rooms.

However, sentimentality and ‘lavishness’ aside, perhaps this Christmas is a great time to offload your closets and start the New year with a conveniently spiced up wardrobe.

Start your offloads by piling up your clothes in three piles. Keep, maybe and toss piles

Keep – On this pile, include the outfits you totally love, need on a day to day basis and would love to have in your closet for days to come.

Toss – Here, include those outfits you hardly think about twice. The kinds you keep shifting because they seem to take much of your closet space and give you a hard time finding what you need to wear! Perhaps it’s time to let them GO!

Maybe – Should include all the sentimental pieces you love, but hardly worn in the past 3 months. Perhaps your sense of style changed, but they still make for great pieces. Keep this in a separate space and upgrade them to ‘keep’ if you wear them within 3 months. If not, its only advisable to ‘toss’ them the next time you organize.

While this activity may get ‘emotional and hard’ for some, it ultimately brings a sense of relief and comfort knowing that you have a tidier, more manageable closed.

If the outfits are quite posh, you could sell them out in yard sale or shopping sites and make some money over the holiday season.

Impressively you could give the rest to siblings, friends or donate to charities, and the best part is that you will feel better giving them out to someone that appreciates.
