At the tender age of 10, she had been forced into a wife-like relationship with her step-father. The little girl’s mother had fled from her first abusive marriage in Olasi village, Kisumu County when she fell into yet another troubled marriage.

The woman’s second husband man took her in with her daughter. She gave birth to three other children with this man.

But a year and a half ago, they had some domestic misunderstandings and the woman fled from home, leaving behind her children, not knowing that her first-born daughter had taken her place as a wife.

According to Peace Initiative Kenya Co-ordinator Caren Omanga, the man is alleged to have been defiling his step-daughter and also raping his own mother.

But somehow, word reached other villagers who on October 1, this year, went and reported the matter and Administration Police officers came to the rescue of the girl.

“They took the girl for a medical check up and the man was arrested and taken to Boya Police Station. We do not understand what happened after that since after processing the P3, we found out that the man had been released,” she says.

Ms Omanga reported the matter and an order was given that the police re-arrest the man. “I had to hide the girl since we are not sure of what the man would do to her now that he is at large,” she says.
