Two die, one injured in Taita Taveta road crash

Two people, including a woman, died on the spot and another seriously injured in a road accident along the Voi-Mwatate road on Wednesday.

Police Thursday said the accident in which a boda boda rider and his passenger were killed involved a Toyota Land Cruiser and a motorbike near Caltex service station in the outskirts of Voi town.

Taita-Taveta County Police Commander Richard Bitonga confirmed the incident. He said the driver of the Toyota Land Cruiser was rushed to Voi County Referral Hospital in critical condition.

The police boss said the driver who was coming from Mwatate to Voi hit the motorcycle heading towards Mwatate town where he lost control.

Speeding driver

“It appears the driver of the Land Cruiser was speeding as the vehicle rolled several times before landing in the Voi Sisal Estate plantation along the road,” said Mr Bitonga.

Investigations into the accident had been launched. The incident comes barely two days after two family members perished and scores others seriously injured in two separate crashes in the county.

The tragedy brings to seven the number of people who have died in road crashes in the past one week in a county experiencing a rise in road carnage.
