‘Kapso’ students bathed in rivers, fetched water in sufurias

News

Kapsokwony High School in Bungoma County prides itself as the first secondary school  in the then larger Mt Elgon District where it began as a boys only “Harambe” school in 1965.

The government took it over in 1967.  It was the only school that offered A-Levels in the region, before it was scrapped.

Alumni of ‘Kapso’ have one lingering memory — biting water shortage. So bad was it that students took morning baths in the chilly waters of near Nguresai and Kimeriin Rivers besides drawing the same for personal use using giant sufurias and basins.

The trend changed from last year when new principal Joab Otieno partnered with   Water Missions International to fix the problem.

‘Kapso’ has done well in soccer, volleyball and even athletes, with their main rivals being Cheptais High against whom it played a soccer match that ended in bloody fighting. Some students were hospitalised that June in 2000.

Notable alumni guided by the motto is ‘Knowledge for Empowerment’ include Mt Elgon MP John Serut (one-time headboy), Bungoma County Deputy Governor Hillary Chongwony, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi and Fafi sub-county Commissioner Geoffrey Taragon.

Others who sported blue ties, white shirts and grey trousers are Prof Johson Changeiywo (Egerton), Prof Chrispus Ndiema (Masinde Muliro University), Prof Solomon Musani (University of Mississippi Medical Center), Prof Peter Kibas, Vice Chancellor Presbyterian University of East Africa, Dr Jason Kap Kirwok an author and Country Director, TradeMark East Africa and Citizen Tv’s political reporter Kendagor Obadiah who presented news to the school assembly every Monday morning!
