Deal with graft, House team tells acting Deputy Inspector General of Police Joel Kitili

The National Assembly Administration and National Security Committee wants the acting Deputy Inspector General of Police Joel Kitili to deal with corruption within the police service.

The committee, through its chairman Asman Kamama, said it welcomes the sending home of Grace Kaindi and her replacement with the former General Service Unit (GSU) commandant.

“I have known Kitili as a disciplined and resilient officer in the management of police operations, especially in Kapedo and Suguta. Corruption within the police service is slowly becoming insurmountable,” said Kamama.

“The new DIG has a monumental task in the transformation of the police service as recommended in the Ransley Report,” he added.

On Tuesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated Kitili who now awaits vetting by the National Police Service Commission. “To ensure smooth transition in the National Police Service, President Uhuru Kenyatta has nominated Joel Kitili as acting Deputy Inspector General of Police,” said a statement from State House.

The committee also wants the new DIG to deal with the wave of crime including taming terrorism threat.

“The police have better equipment because this committee and the ministry have provided them with a sufficient budget. We need to see a more proactive police unit,” said Kamama.

Kitili will help in overseeing operations within Anti-Terrorism Police Unit, Recce and Anti-Narcotics Unit.
