The Government has embarked on a national tuberculosis burden survey targeting 72,000 people.
The study, scheduled to start immediately, will use a new digital x-ray diagnosis machine to provide data on TB prevalence and incidence among Kenyan populations.
Speaking during the launch at Panafric Hotel in Nairobi, the director of medical services, Dr. Nicholas Muraguri (pictured), said the survey was long overdue since the last one was conducted in 1958 — some 63 years ago.
He said TB was the fourth leading cause of death in Kenya, with the HIV epidemic being the top contributing factor to the massive increase of the TB burden.
In 2014 about 90,000 TB cases were detected in Kenya. This survey will provide a reference point for future treatment of risk groups.
