Lugari MP Ayub Savula seeks to woo 7 million locals in voter registration before 2017

Members of Parliament from Western region led by Lugari MP Ayub Savula have intensified campaign to ensure 7 million residents in the region register as voters before 2017 general elections.

Speaking in Trans Nzoia during a funds drive at Masinde Muliro secondary school, Savula and area MP Dr. Chris Wamalwa challenged leaders in the region to support the voter registration campaigns.

The legislator noted that many people in Western region are ignorant of the importance of participating in general elections.

Savula said he was optimistic that his target to register 7 million people as voters will be realized, adding that a huge number of youth in the region do not possess national identity cards and therefore miss opportunities.

"We have the numerical advantage to take the leadership of this county but majority of our people fail to participate in the general election," he said.

Savula said the Luhya community is capable of producing their own presidential candidate if the move is taken seriously.

Savula who was accompanied by Trans Nzoia MP Janet Nangabo and Saboti MP David Lazaro disclosed that he has started a raffle worth Sh5 million to lure residents in the region to register as voters before next polls.

He said he has purchased a pick-up and motorcycles to be competed in the lottery in a bid to encourage voters to undergo the registration process.

"Let us strive toward the interest of our people. I urge all leaders in the region irrespective of their political affiliations to support our people acquire IDs and register as voters," he urged.

His recent move has however been challenged by a section of leaders from the region who have maintained that the legislator ought to unite with the rest of the leadership before advocating for voter registration.
