Court adjourns defamation case against former Governance and Ethics PS Githongo

NAIROBI, KENYA: A defamation case against the former Governance and Ethics Permanent Secretary John Githongo will be heard in the next three weeks.

High Court Judge David Onyancha rescheduled the case to July 17 after Githongo asked for an adjournment to attend to a personal matter.

Lawyer representing former Chris Murungaru, Kioko Kilukumi was also for the adjournment citing that he needed more time to re-examine his client.

The case whose hearing ran for two days saw Murungaru question being mentioned adversely in the Anglo-Leasing scandal.
The allegations, he said, created the impression that in the matter of Anglo Leasing, he conducted himself inappropriately and benefited from the corruption.

"My question for the past 10 years has been-provide the evidence," he challenged his accuser.

Githongo, Murungaru told the court, has never been an investigator in the country and neither has he been gazetted as one.
Githongo was sued nine years ago for allegedly defaming Murungaru by stating that he had made secret recordings that linked him to the Anglo Leasing Scandal that saw the country lose billions of shillings.
