Sonu leader boozing at Central Police

Sonu leader Babu Owino

Cops at the Central Police Station were stunned after they allegedly spotted Sonu chairman Babu Owino and other students openly boozing at the station’s entrance.

The student leader had allegedly gone to bail out three comrades arrested for drinking before ‘Mututho time,’ One of the students who had escaped arrest told Campus Vibe they had gone to ‘toa lock’ (‘kill’ hangover) when the officers pounced on them.

An officer attached to the station said, “It is sad that students do this around the station. We didn’t do that during our time”.

Officer Commanding Central Police Station Alphonse Ngondu however told Campus Vibe that, “It’s not illegal to drink near a police station. We have a canteen around here that is also patronised by students. Even some of the officers attached to the station leave here drunk.”

Ngondu added: “I remember two of the students who fought over Sh700, but I released them after they agreed to solve the matter on their own.”

The officer said it is their duty to arrest and lock up those found drunk to save them from robbers and other opportunists, and would even escort some home whenever possible. “Many of them later thank me for helping them. Theirs is a petty crime, but if they create disturbance, we must take action,” said the OCS.
