Businessman shoots guard in mistaken identity incident

NAIROBI, KENYA: Police are investigating yet another shooting incident involving a licensed gun holder in which a guard was injured as he responded to a distress call in Karen area, Nairobi.

Businessman James Kariuki has been asked to surrender his firearm after he shot and wounded a guard who was responding to an alarm at a private compound on Wednesday night.

The police said the guard was shot in the stomach and leg in the incident, police said adding he is stable at the Karen Hospital.

A gang had raided the compound, shot dead a dog before robbing the female owner of Sh15,000 mobile phone and other valuables that were in her handbag.

According to Langata OCPD James Mwangi, the woman raised an alarm alerting her neighbours too.

The guard with his two colleagues sped to the scene in a Salon car after the gang of three, one armed with a pistol, had left.

"It was then that Kariuki who is the neighbour of the victim of the robbery responded and fired at the Salon car mistaking it for thugs'. Unfortunately he injured the guard who is in hospital," said Mwangi.

The gang escaped and no arrest has been made. The incident came a day after businessman Paul Kobia alias Paul Ilunga Ngoei shot dead a robbery suspect along Parklands' Limuru Road on Tuesday in a botched robbery.
