Motorists plying Jogoo Road endured heavy traffic after a bus assumed to be Senator Sonko’s broke down in the middle of the road.
The August 15 incident angered motorists who wondered why Sonko couldn’t repair his vehicle with some terming it an ‘embarrassment.’
However, when contacted by The Nairobian, Senator Sonko revealed that the bus was no longer in his possession and that he had sold it to City Shuttle.
“A month ago, I sold the bus to City Shuttle Bus Company for Sh7 million. It is no longer in my possession. Actually, the new owners have changed its colour,” he said.
The Swedish double-decker bus, which had been grounded for five years due to mechanical problems, gained popularity during Sonko’s maiden campaigns as he ferried Makadara constituents for free to and from the city centre. In a past interview, Alex Mlami, the driver, said the bus had mechanical problems.
“I was driving the bus since it was imported from the UK around 2002. Unfortunately, it developed mechanical problems due to our poor roads just after the by-election. We were forced to ground it, but I am happy we are back in business,” he said.
City Shuttle’s director Chris Kamande told The Nairobian that the August 15 incident was due to a mechanical problem which has since been fixed. “The bus is now ours, but we retained the driver, Alex Mlami. The incident was a mechanical problem, but we are now back in business,” he said.
