Rugby top organ reshuffles its administration

Kenya Rugby Union has made major changes in its administration following a board meeting in Nairobi on Wednesday and chairman Mwangi Muthee said they face their busiest period this year.

The meeting created eleven dockets to be headed by a union Director with the assistance of the Chief Executive Officer Jack Okoth.

Mwangi said: “We have our cut out and hope each head will be up to the task and demonstrate it to the people we serve.”

He said their immediate absolute priority was to stage successful Kenya Cup League finals and the Bamburi Super Series.

Other events the union seeks to address successfully are Kenya’s qualification matches for the 2015 Rugby World Cup and ensure the Safaricom Sevens enter the HSBC World Sevens Series beside it being anAfrican Championship in Nairobi in September.

The rest are Kenya’s participation in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China and Kenya Women’s Sevens Team qualification’s bid to the World series in September.

Muthee said the appointed officials have each committed themselves to work to the best of their ability.

They are Dennis Ombui who will be the Director of National Squads and Elite Performance, a post previously held by vice chairman Philip Jalang’o.

Ombui who is a lawyer takes over from Kenya Airways pilot Ogutu Kadienda who will now head the Media and Communications department.

He (Ombui) who currently resides in South Africa effectively takes charge of the busy playing unit and will direct operations of the national teams.

The Kenya 15s Team are currently in South Africa for the Vodacom Championships while the Sevens Team is in the country training for the World Series rounds in Scotland and England, the Women’s Sevens is seeking qualification to the World Series and the boys’ Under-19 team is hoping to take part in the forthcoming Youth Olympics in China.

Moses Ndale will be in charge of the crucial docket of Competitions and Fixtures at a time Kenya has become remarkably large with over 70 senior and minor rugby clubs playing in several national and regional leagues.

 Ndale is a company director at Motech Systems Limited.

Peninah Wahome, who will oversee Development at grassroots, schools and colleges, will supplement Ndale’s portfolio.

Wahome is a Director of the Directorate of Sport at Kenyatta University.

KRU vice chairman Philip Jalang’o will chair the Organising Committee of the Bamburi Super Rugby Series [BRSS].

Chairman Mwangi Muthee will head the Organising Committee of the 2014 Safaricom Sevens-cum Africa Championship as well as Safaricom Sevens bid to be included in the HSBC Sevens World Series for 2015/16.

Jack Okoth, remains the Chief Executive Officer and will continue to head union’s secretariat while lawyer Eddie Omondi is the Director in charge of Administration and Disciplinary Committee.

Mwangi said a Board induction seminar will soon be held, however the chairman added: “But, regardless, everyone should hit the ground running before that.”
