The youth team to the second Africa Athletics Youth Championship in Mauritius that ended on Sunday flew back home to a warm reception from relatives, Government and Athletics Kenya officials.

The Kenyans finished second with 19 medals (eight gold, nine silver and two bronze) behind South Africa who won 20 medals.

AK Vice President Paul Mutwii was at the forefront of welcoming the team and paying them tribute for their performance.

"We did exemplarily well and we now should focus on Cali, Colombia, for the IAAF World Youth Championships," said Muwtii, who was also the team's chief de mission. Commissioner for Sports Gordon Oluoch represented the Government.

After missing out on the medal bracket at the Africa Junior Championships in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 16-year-old Emily Chebet was delighted to break the 3,000m girls record by shaving seven minutes off Mercy Chebwogen's 9:17.52 at the inaugural event in Warri, Nigeria, in 2013.

"I was so happy with my time of 9.10.59 to win the gold. That was my target. Now I will be happy if I can replicate the same performance at the World Youth Championships in Colombia in July," said Chebet, who led a 1-2 finish alongside Sheila Chelangat with a time of 9:11.38.

Youngster Vincent Kipyego, who won gold in the 2,000m boys' steeplechase in a time of five minutes 30 seconds, was also pleased with his achievement after losing the same race at the Africa Junior Championships in Ethiopia earlier in the year.

"I'm pleased with gold and now I'm hopeful to make it to the team that will carry Kenya's flag in Colombia," said Kipyego, a Form Three student at Soti Secondary School in Bomet County.

The team also managed a rare medal in the boys' 400m hurdles and 100m girls', with Geoffrey Kipngetich's gold and Damaris Akoth's silver medals respectively.
