According to the university’s chief security officer Fred Otieno, these attacks are as a result of carelessness and ignorance of students.
“Two students left their door open while the other two were attacked at 1am by people who claimed to be police,” he said, adding that, “Our students were attacked since there was power blackout as a result of heavy rains. But besides, the attacks students have ignored our calls to rent hostels with security guards and perimeter walls.”
Maseno University Director of Students Affairs Prof Peter Oracha is asking police in Maseno to, “intensify night patrols in the region especially where our students are residing to ensure that their safety is enhanced. The lives of students matter much and we will do all we can to ensure that they are protected.”
Maseno University hostels host only 5,000 of the 16,000 students per session.
