Award-winning Kenyan music group Sauti Sol have been asked by the Kenya Films Classification Board (KFCB) to submit their latest music video ‘Melanin’ for examination and classification for examination and classification for age suitability.
KFCB Chief Executive Officer Ezekiel Mutua, through a statement released on Thursday 23rd November, said that Sauti Sol released the video without following content production and distribution regulations provided in Part II of the Film and Stage Plays Act, Cap 222 of the Law of Kenya.
“The Board takes great exception with Sauti Sol’s decision to release the video without following content production and distribution regulations provided in Part II of the Film and Stage Plays Act, Cap 222 of the Law of Kenya,” read part of the statement.
The Board said this, indicating that the video was unsuitable for children as it contains scenes with intense nudity and obscenity.
While KFCB has not banned the video, it has warned any media station of airing the song during the watershed period.
“Contrary to claims doing rounds on social media, classification of content does not amount to banning. The Board recognizes the freedom of adults to watch any content and rate content with adult themes as unsuitable for children and inappropriate for airing during the watershed period, “said the Board.
KFCB also asked artists to be responsible with their content.
