MOMBASA, KENYA: Uganda President Yoweri Museveni has landed in Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa for a two-day state visit.

His host President Uhuru Kenyatta and other dignitaries including Deputy President William Ruto and Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho received him at the Moi International Airport.

The two leaders are expected to proceed to the State House where they will hold a bilateral meeting before addressing a joint press conference.

During the meeting at the State House, they are expected to discuss best ways to address the quick movement of Ugandan cargo from the port of Mombasa.

President Museveni is also said to be keen on Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension from Naivasha Kisumu to Malaba and a link-up to his country.

Statistics show that Uganda is the main Mombasa port user compared to other landlocked countries within the region.  “At least 70 per cent of cargo handled at the port is for Uganda. This shows Uganda is our biggest customer,”  Kenya Ports Authority official said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has been very hard on those managing the port owing to its importance in revenue generation. Last year, the head of state made sweeping changes affecting top port management staff.

The changes saw Dr Daniel Manduku become the new KPA Managing Director and retired General Joseph Kibwana the chairperson of the board of directors.
