Grief as Butere Girls student who committed suicide laid to rest in Kitui

A sombre mood engulfed Kakulunga village in Miambani Ward, Kitui Central, as body of Butere Girls High School student who committed suicide was laid to rest last weekend.

While paying their last respects, mourners eulogized Elizabeth Musoi Muunya as a hardworking, social, obedient and ambitious girl.

Speaker after speaker termed the death of the 17-year-old total orphan unfortunate and untimely.

"It is so sad to lose such a young soul whose future looked very promising. This should never befall any family," lamented area MCA Alex Nganga.

Crispus Ileli, a neighbor, urged learning institutions to put in place sound guidance and counselling programmes so as address problems facing students to prevent similar incidents in future.

Kitui Woman MP Dr Irene Kasalu urged the police to investigate circumstances leading to death of the student so as to grant the bereaved family closure.

The deceased allegedly took her own life at the school's dormitory in Kakamega County on February 15.

She was reportedly discovered in the dormitory on her knees hanging from one of the top beds with a tie around her neck.

A suicide note allegedly written by the deceased was also found at the crime scene, according to police sources.

It read: “Forgive me my sister for what I have done. I want to join mum and dad in heaven because I cannot take being sent away from school.”
