The police in Eldoret are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found on a maize farm at Cheptiret on Sunday morning.

A resident who did not want to be named said he had gone to answer a call of nature when he found the body.

"I was shocked to see the body. I rushed to a nearby home and told them about it. We later called the police and they took it away," said the witness.

The scene was littered with used condoms.

Eldoret South OCPD Wilson Abduba said the woman appeared to be in her 30s.

“The deceased was naked and condoms littered the ground, an indication she might have been raped,” said Mr Abduba.

He added: “She had bruises on the neck. Our officers have taken the body to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital as we investigate the killing."

Some residents claimed the woman was in a group that had gone out to drink the night before her body was found.

They asked the police to speed investigations and arrest the culprits.

"This is heinous. We are calling on the police to investigate the matter thoroughly and take action against those responsible," said a resident Sospeter Mutai.

They took issue with the large number of bars in the area and asked the Government to close down those that were not licensed.

They asked the security officials to intensify night patrols in the area.
