Are there “moles” among Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners who leak information from the electoral body to either Jubilee Party or the National Super Alliance? Well, there is a trend at the commission that every major decision it tends to make get leaked before it is agreed upon.
The latest indication that some of the commissioners are allied to the two political parties played out last week when the commission appeared before the Joint Select Committee of Parliament. Before IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati could introduce himself, a Jubilee senator and a member of the committee, who in a few minutes was seen reading a text message from his phone, interrupted the committee’s co-chair, William Cheptumo, to question why Chebukati was appearing alone.
The committee members took turns in implying that the chair could be mischievous and present his views as that of the commission. True to the suspicion, it emerged that some of the commissioners had declined to accompany Chebukati after he unilaterally crafted a cover letter that was opposed to the amendments to the electoral laws.
So did one of the commissioners leak the information? Another committee member was also heard whispering to a journalist that Chebukati was giving them hard time and wished they had another official as the boss.
