Wanyama’s former club lifts Scottish Premiership

I bet very few Kenyans new much about Celtic Football Club; not until the Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama signed for the Scottish side in July 2011 from Beershot AC.

But most importantly, Wanyama made headlines all over thanks to his powerful header as Celtic shocked Barcelona after winning 2-1 in a Champions League group stage fixture on 7th November 2012 at Celtic Park.

In 2013, he moved to England’s Southampton, becoming the most expensive player to be sold in Scottish Football. He spent three years at St Mary’s before signing for Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

On Sunday, Celtic claimed the Scottish silverware for the sixth time in a row and 48th time since club’s inception in 1888.

The Celts hammered five goals past Heart of Midlothian to claim the trophy with eight games to spare.

Englishman, Scott Sinclair, who has played for more than ten clubs in England and Scotland combined- Chelsea, Man City, QPR, Aston Villa among others, netted a hat trick. Stuart Armstrong and Patrick Roberts also got on the scoreboard.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has won the trophy in his maiden season, is seeking for a treble now that Scottish League cup was already won in late November last year and the Northern Irish is already in the Scottish Cup semifinals.

Celtic who have had a smooth season, are unbeaten so far this season. No club in Scotland’s history has won the league with a clean sheet.

The success can be attributed to the former Liverpool manager and a brood of players in the team. 20-year old Moussa Dembele who has scored 17 goals and five assists, Sinclair who has netted 18 goals so far this season and six assists. Armstrong, who has found the back of the net 12 times and six assists has had an outstanding performance this campaign for the Glasgow-based side.
