Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has said academic qualifications should not be imposed as a basic requirement for leaders seeking various elective positions.

Speaking on Monday in Kapseret village Uasin Gishu County during the final send-off of Former Nominated MP Mark Too, Senator Murkomen gave an example of the Late Mark Too as a leader who complimented his little education he acquired in primary education with exemplary leadership skills.

"You saw me recently in the Senate arguing that we can't use education to lock out able leaders, me I really stand for that," said Murkomen.

The legislator said if education had been used as a measure of ability in political leadership in the past, outstanding leaders like Mark Too would not have gone far.

Senator Murkomen pointed out that it should be left to the citizens to freely choose who leads them or represents them in Parliament, regardless of academic qualifications.

In his submission before the senate, claimed that many leaders would take advantage of the requirements to purchase degrees from universities.

“Imposing academic qualification to leaders might increase fraud in our institutions. We have seen leaders acquire degrees yet they have never stepped in any class.I have even seen some transacting various business while they claim to have been in class,”Murkomen added
