Maseno University's dean of students Mr. Kweya Opande has admitted student elections are tougher than a PhD coursework. He made this remarks while addressing students during the swearing in of the newly elected Students Organization of Maseno University(SOMU) at the institutions graduation square.
"Students elections are so tough, they are even tougher than a PhD. I wish to thank all the students for their patience during the electioneering period and request them to continue as such" he said.
This is the second time the institution has had peaceful elections after the botched elections that experienced incidents of goons and many students were expelled. He took credit for that saying it is under his steadfast leadership that the students have had a peaceful, free and fair elections.
"I thank you all peaceful, free, fair and above all acceptable elections that we have had. I appreciate the cordial relationship I have had with the outgoing students leadership and I would like us to continue in the same manner", he added. He further stated that he appreciates consultative leadership and will not meddle in students affairs.
During his speech he was however quick to advise the current elected leadership to work hand in hand with all students notwithstanding the political inclinations they had before. "I would like all the elected leaders to delink campaigns from servant leadership". He continued saying after the resumption of their duties, they seized to be linked to their different factions and now lead the whole student fraternity.
In reference to the newly elected SOMU president, he said," from now you are the president of all the students, seek a means of working together with all of them for the betterment of Maseno University."
The elected officials will undergo an induction training later to ensure they keep abreast with what is required of them in the positions they hold.
