GEORGE MUTUA learnt about precast building materials while on a tour abroad. He became interested and decided to try the idea in Kenya. Upon arriving in the country, he began experimenting with the idea which quickly grew into a business empire as Kenyans embraced a fast, affordable way of building.

Briefly introduce yourself.

My name is George Mutua, the founder and CEO Global Precast Panels.

What motivated you to get into precast panels and when did you launch this project?

I started in 2017. I learnt about the technology while I was abroad. I got interested in it when we wanted to build my house upcountry. I was looking for a fast and affordable way to construct the house, especially because I did not have a lot of time to supervise the construction. Fortunately or unfortunately, I did not get a local supplier. I took it as an opportunity to introduce the technology in Kenya.

So far how has this technology been received among Kenyans?

Because of the benefits that come with this technology, most Kenyans are warming up to it. More and more people are using precast technology to build their houses. More particularly, those who have seen how it is working in other countries are more receptive. Institutions, real estate contractors and commercial establishments have also embraced precast because of the shorter time it takes to construct using the technology.

What are the biggest challenges you have faced so far in the precast building materials business?

The constant changes in the cost of construction materials such as cement and steel are affecting the cost of production.

What makes this building technology unique compared to the normal construction process?

It is fast, thereby reducing the time it takes to construct a house. It is cheaper, hence reducing the cost of construction. It also reduces the wastage of construction materials as well as the cost of finishes.

Where and how did you get the skills?

We invited skilled experts from abroad who trained our team.

How much do you make in a good month?

This varies from one season to another. We make good money on a good month. We get a lot of business during school holidays. Schools are only allowed to build when there is no learning in progress. With precast panels, you can do so much within a short time compared to what you can achieve using conventional methods.

Some Kenyans are sceptical about the stability of buildings constructed using precast materials... We have a facility where all quality checks are done. Even the Nairobi Expressway was built using precast materials; we use the same technology. Our construction materials are stable.

What are some of the weaknesses associated with this technology?

The technology is a better option in construction. All we need is to sensitise the public about it.

How are you planning to expand your business?

We plan to continue introducing more products into the market as well as change as the market demands.

Your parting shot?

We cannot resist technology. People need to embrace technology, that is the future.
