A mandazi seller has been accused of burning his wife with hot tea.
Mr Felix Omondi Were, a father of three, is alleged to have attacked Ms Lilian Mogoi Nyamari on March 14 at their Soweto home.
The court heard that the couple was making tea for supper when an argument ensued.
Ms Nyamari is said to have accused Mr Were of failing to provide for his family, but he (Were) defended himself on grounds that Covid-19 had affected his business.
An argument ensued and Ms Nyamari attempted to splash tea on him, but in defence, he blocked the sufuria, and the boiling tea scalded her.
In a sworn affidavit, the investigating officer, Mr Juma Wesonga, said Mr Were scalded his wife on March 14, leaving her with serious injuries.
Ms Nyamari is currently admitted at the Kenyatta National Hospital ICU undergoing treatment.
“The nature of the case is a serious one. We require evidence from the victim, who is still admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital ICU. However, she cannot speak due to the gravity of the burns,” Mr Wesonga stated.
However, the court noted the rights of the suspect had been infringed after he was placed in custody for more than four days as opposed to the stipulated time.
The matter will be mentioned on March 29.
