Dr Stella Nyanzi resigned in July 17 as a research fellow at Makerere University to venture into politics. The controversial activist intends to run for the Kampala Woman Member of Parliament under the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party.

Taking to her social media, Dr Nyanzi oozed confidence in herself saying she has what it takes to represent the country’s capital and that she is seeking to fly the opposition party’s flag in the 2021 Uganda General Election.

“This morning, I am going for a vetting interview at the FDC headquarters. In my political party, we have democratic processes of identifying, selecting, assessing, electing and appointing individuals for leadership roles.

I am undertaking another step of the internal party procedures. I am competing against other FDC-women who expressed interest in the candidacy of the position of Kampala Woman Member of Parliament. This vetting interview will lead to a harmonisation process.

Please pray for me to have the wisdom and understanding to impress the FDC Electoral Commission team who are the vetters. I am the only woman who was created to win the Kampala Woman Member of Parliament race for the 2021-2026 period. I am raising highly the FDC symbol of the sky-blue key! FDC oyeeeeeee! Raaaa!” She posted on Facebook.

Earlier this year, Dr Nyanzi was released from Kampala’s Luzira Women’s Prison where she was incarcerated for harassing President Yoweri Museveni on social media in 2018.

Ahead of her meeting with the party organs, the former Makerere University research fellow requested her supporter to help her raise over USh1.2 billion for the Kampala Woman MP race campaigns: “My budget for campaigning for Kampala Woman Member of Parliament elections is 1,258,700,000 Uganda Shillings. Let’s talk about fundraising.”

Speaking to the media after submitting her nomination papers at FDC headquarters early last month, Ms Nyanzi expressed her desire to be part of the team that will be reforming the effects of President Yoweri Museveni’s impact on the country.

“When (President) Museveni leaves office in 2021, the effects of his military dictatorship are going to be with my generation and your generation.

“So, I want to be part of those who are reforming, reclaiming our constitution, demilitarizing our country, taking out nepotism and it is not going to take one day.”
