New champions were crowned as the 2018 Eastern Region Secondary Schools Term One Games ended yesterday at Kangaru School.

Hosts Kangaru were the biggest casualties as they relinquished both the 15s rugby and basketball titles to Miathene and Meru School.

Kangaru failed to defend their honour going down 12-16 to Miathene in the finals.

However, they will be seeking redemption at the national games having qualified as the second side from the region. In basketball, Kangaru were subjected to a humiliating 104-66 loss on their home turf and locked out of the nationals they will be hosting in a fortnight.

Perhaps sending an early warning to their counterparts who will be battling for the national title at the same venue next month, Meru were on fire.

Meru made their intentions known from the onset subduing Kangaru and taking an early 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

At half time, they had already extended their lead with four baskets with a 43-31 score at the break.

Kangaru’s fate was sealed in the third quarter as they scored an impressive 38-13 to go into the final period with a comfortable 81-44 lead. The final quarter was closely contested with both sides scoring in turns but it was too late for last year’s winners Kangaru as Meru broke into celebration.

Kirigara proved that they are indeed the best girls’ basketball team in the region. [Elizabeth Mburugu]
