Interviews: Portray a good image for the job

By Peter Kamuri

People always wonder what holds them back from getting their dream jobs. After attending job interviews, they come out bubbling with confidence, hoping to be contacted to sign contracts. In their view, they had presented the most impressive curriculum vitae (CV) and posted the best qualifications compared to the other interviewees.

However, frustrations start setting in when they realise they were unsuccessful in the job interview. Little do they know they had dressed poorly and consequently, they join the long list of people who fail in job interviews, for overlooking appearance.

Often, a number of people forget dressing for career success is part of the preparation needed in a job search. We have all heard about the importance of first impression. This can never be more critical than when you are looking for a job.

When people see you for the first time, they form an opinion about you. By the way, have you ever asked yourself why people are invited for interviews? Why can’t prospective employers just review your CVs and academic qualifications? Yes, interviewers want to see the faces behind the papers.

Job expectations

Next time you get a chance to be invited for an interview, ask yourself: Do I portray a good image for the job I am looking for? Does the way I dress match the job expectations?

Always remember that when you dress for career success, you are making a statement to the potential employers that you really take the job seriously and you believe you befit what the job takes.

For some jobs, the way you dress is very critical. If you hope to work in a bank or managerial position, the dressing demands may not be the same as someone hoping to work as an engineer in a manufacturing firm.

Therefore, know the nature of the organisation you are seeking employment in and the nature of the job. Wearing ostentatious clothing and jewellery may not help either.

Many interviewees think they can impress by wearing flamboyantly and colourfully. At times, this can only make you look ineffective and superfluous and you appear to be covering up something.

Moderation in dress is always key for the professional interview. You want to appear positive, dependable, and refined. These qualities can only be manifested by the manner of your dressing.

Therefore, next time you get an opportunity to attend an interview, do not rush for your 10 years old woollen suit simply because a friend had complimented you the last time you wore it.

The clothes you chose may stand between you and your next job, so be careful when making your selection.
