Having produced some of the best hockey players for years, Kisumu Day proved why they are highly ranked when it comes to the sport after they hit Lenana from Nairobi 6-0 in a preliminary match of the Kenya Secondary Schools Championships at Kangaru, Embu.
The champions, besides winning, showed how smart they are in set pieces as four of their goals came from penalty corners.
Hannington Otieno put Kisumu in the lead after eight minutes when he converted a short corner before he doubled his efforts off another penalty stroke in the 31st minute.
The winners scored four more goals in the second half from Paulvine Omondi (51st, 60th), Ali Mohammed (58th) and Dennis Otieno (66th).
National champions Friends School Kamusinga had an easy ride over hosts Masii after they trounced them 9-0 after a 5-0 lead at half time.
National team junior player Steven Wokila was the chief destroyer after he recorded four goals to his name, scoring in the seventh, 13th, 37th and 55th minutes of the match.
Kamusinga shocked Masii with a first half goal when Collins Muhasa sounded the boards with a lightening ground goal.
Daniel Wafula and Richard Mutambo scored two goals apiece with Gregory Wekesa contributing one.
In the girls’ category, Lwak from Nyanza beat hosts Kisau 2-0 with Harriet Omindi and Cynthia Onyango scoring in the 50th and 55th minute. Hillcrest from Nairobi edged Kiundwani from Eastern 1-0 in their opening match.
Itigo from Rift Valley and Misikhu of Western, both former champions, played to a goalless draw in another girls’ match yesterday.
The games are also featuring sevens rugby, swimming, cross-country, heptathlon and heptathlon.
Swimming co-ordinator Vitalis Otwoma said the competition will start at Kamburu dam on Friday.
