Agnes Kavindu celebrates after being declared the winner of the Machakos County senatorial by-election [Courtesy]

Wiper Party's Agnes Kavindu Muthama has been declared the winner of the Machakos Senatorial by-election.

IEBC’s Machakos Returning Officer Joyce Wamalwa named Kavindu the winner after she garnered 104,352 votes against her closest competitor Urbanus Ngengele of UDA who got 19,726

Speaking during the announcement at the Machakos University on Friday afternoon, Kavindu thanked all those who voted for her promising to continue representing the people of Machakos at the Senate.

The by-election came about following the death of Boniface Kabaka on December 11, last year and attracted 11 aspirants including three independent candidates.

Speaking at the same event, former Machakos Wiper Party gubernatorial aspirant Wavinya Ndeti alluded the low voter turn-out on Thursday was a result of the elections being held during a weekday plus it being a planting season.

“Thank you Mr President and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, you really supported us during the campaigns and we the Akamba people promise to return our hand…BBI tutapitisha (We will pass the BBI Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2020) ” Wavinya said.

Machakos County Commissioner Fred Ndunga on his part thanked residents and candidates for the peaceful exercise.

There was a low voter turnout IEBC placing it at 19.48 per cent. The constituency has 110,073 registered voters.
