Bungoma County Assembly Speaker John Makali has called on parents to enroll their children in institutions of higher learning for them to acquire skills that will uplift their lives.
Mr Makali decried the low number of professionals in the county saying it was a result of failure by learners to advance their education past secondary school.
Speaking in Bungoma on Saturday, Makali said many students are not proceeding from secondary to colleges and universities because of poverty.
"We don't want cases of importing human resources from other regions. Let parents educate their children so that they can take up jobs in the county government. Education is the only sure way to succeed in life," said Makali.
He said that when they advertise for jobs, few apply for them in the county because parents have not enrolled their children in colleges and this forces the county to source for professional workforce from other regions.
"Poverty should not be a hindrance for you enrolling your children to institutions of higher learning. Try as much as possible to ensure that your children are trained in different fields so that they can be employed in the counties. Jobs are available but only to qualified professionals," he said.
He said parents in the county keep their children at home once they fail to secure places in public universities and conventional institutions.
