There was drama at Naivasha sub-county hospital after an inmate who had been brought in for treatment from Naivasha Medium prison escaped in unclear circumstances.

Following the incident on Saturday, tens of warders swarmed the hospital compound searching every ward and every structure in the busy facility without any success.

The inmate who has been remanded in prison for the last one year for defilement escaped from one of the toilets where he had gone to answer a call of nature.

According to a witness Simon Mwai, over ten inmates escorted by armed warders from the prison had arrived in the hospital for treatment in the morning of December 9.

He said that the suspect sought to use one of the toilets in the hospital and was escorted by one of the warders as he relieved himself.

"He managed to escape through a window in the toilet and by the time the warders realized what had happened, he was nowhere to be seen," he said.

The Superintendent in charge of the hospital Dr Bernard Warui confirmed the incident adding that police and the prison warders had taken over the matter.

"The suspect had just been brought to the hospital for treatment but he managed to escape from the toilet in unclear circumstances," he said.

Meanwhile, police in Naivasha are investigating a bizarre incident where two suspects shot and seriously injured a caretaker in the mouth before fleeing without stealing anything.

The two were seeking a room to rent in the house located in Hopewell estate when they turned against the victim during the midday incident.

Efforts by a group of motorcycle operators to stop the duo were thwarted after they shot in the air forcing the group to scatter for safety.

Naivasha OCPD Benjamin Boen said that the two arrived in a personal car and engaged the caretaker with a view of booking one of the houses.

"They entered one of the houses and a commotion ensued before they shot him in the mouth and fled in their car," he said.

Boen said that they were still investigating the motive behind the incident adding that the victim who was in serious condition had been transferred to PGH in Nakuru for specialized treatment.
