A calculated course management saw Rooney Maina clinch the 21st edition of the Njuri Ncheke Golf Day overall prize at Kenya Railway Golf Club over the weekend.
Maina, playing off handicap 15, borrowed from his lessons the previous day at Royal Nairobi Golf Club, where they had played the Texas Scramble format, firing 59 nett thanks to the structured approach and scoring chances.
In his speech, Maina reflected on the importance of managing the course effectively and executing each shot with precision, which ultimately contributed to his success.
"After our round on Friday at Royal, coming onto the course today, I realized that all I needed was to manage the course well, and I'd score well," said Maina while delivering his speech.
"Planning and executing a shot at a time is all I did, and the score fell in place," he added.
The event, organized by Meru golfers, aimed to celebrate their culture through a combination of food, drinks, music and of course, golf.
The Men winner prize was won by Phillip Kabiaru, playing off handicap 24, with an impressive 39 stableford points. JW Kung'u returned with a score of 38 stableford points to win the Men winner second prize. Senior golfer Ngugi Njuguna was the Men winner third with 36 stableford points. Home golfer Catherine Wanjiku posted 39 stableford points to be declared the Lady winner. Mary Miingi was the Lady winner second with 37 stableford points.
In the Nines, Nelson Mutai won the First Nine with 21 stableford points. Vera Rorey took the Second Nine prize with 22 stableford points.
Nearest to the Pin Men prize was won by Ndiga Kithae. Helen Chepkwony won in the ladies' category.
KRGC Captain Edward Manywanda and Phyllice Gitumbi showcased their remarkable skills by triumphing in the Longest Drive contest for Men and Ladies, respectively.
The Njuri Ncheke winner was Patrick Marangu, playing off handicap 27, with an outstanding score of 37 stableford points. Joseph Murungi secured the second position with 36 stableford points.
In the sponsors' category, Isaac Kinuu starred with a score of 34 stableford points.
Sigona Golf Club's Idah Makoni, shone as the best among the visiting golfers, winning the Guest prize with 34 stableford points.
The Junior category saw Jimmy Semenye emerge as the victor with 34 stableford points off handicap 16 while Joseph Gathumbi won the Gross title with 32 Gross stableford points.
