The Ministry of Education has postponed the scheduled school reopening to next week, Monday, May 6, 2024.

In a statement on April 28, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu said the move results from an assessment of the ongoing floods that have affected most parts of the country making movement impossible and risky for some.

"The devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools are so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety of all affected school communities," Machogu said.

At the same time, Machogu says that his ministry is working with relevant government agencies to ensure measures are put in place to mitigate the adverse effects of the ongoing rains that have left several dead, and thousands left homeless.

Initially, schools were scheduled to reopen for the second term on Monday, April 29 (Today).

A least 93 people have died from the flooding across the country.

The loss of lives comes as the rains and the floods continue to cause massive destruction of property and infrastructure across nearly all counties.

Some 37,595 households have been affected, with nearly half that number displaced from their houses.

5774 livestock have been lost while 32,712 acres of crops have been affected by the floods.
