Motorists accuse officers of extortion at illegal roadblock

Motorists plying the Oyugis-Kendu Bay road have accused police officers manning an illegal roadblock of extortion.

Motor bike riders and drivers of private vehicles and taxis claim the officers demand Sh50 before allowing you to pass through the roadblock at Nyatwere near Oyugis. Those who refuse to part with the cash are arrested.

Mr Dennis Omondi, a rider who was returning from hospital in Kendu Bay, claims his bike was 'detained' after he failed to pay.

He said he left to seek help from friends, but when he returned he found the demand had shot to Sh3,000.

Many motorcycle riders from Kosele and Oyugis said they had to carry more than one passenger to raise cash to give officers at the roadblock.

PSVs too have to carry excess passengers.

“We are tired of these officers who have made it mandatory that we give them money in order to pass here,” said Peter Amollo.

Boda boda chairmen from several bases in Oyugis and Kosele confirmed the extortion.

A chairman from Oyugis, who requested anonymity, said each rider gives approximately Sh1,500 per month.

Rachuonyo North OCPD Patrick Onsando admitted the roadblock was illegal.

He, however, said he had directed the roadblock be removed with immediate effect and will be erected only if there is an alarm.
