The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Igonga, has directed the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to submit an inquiry report within 21 days on the death of Rex Kanyike.
Kanyike was allegedly shot during anti-Finance Bill protests in Nairobi on Thursday. He died while receiving treatment at Bliss Health Care Centre.
"The Office of the DPP confirms Rex Kanyike Masai, 29, was allegedly shot on June 20 in Nairobi's CBD and died at Bliss Health Care Centre," said Igonga.
“DPP has directed IPOA to carry out thorough and comprehensive investigations into the matter,” said Igonga in a statement on Friday, June 21.
“ The Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions reiterates its commitment to upholding the rule law while discharging its constitutional mandate,” he added.

DPP’s directive comes hours after IPOA announced its investigation into Kanyike's death, with Chairperson Anne Makori highlighting contact with the family for assistance.
"IPOA documented Rex Kanyike Masai's death due to police shooting and injuries to demonstrators and police," said Makori.
She praised peaceful protests and the police's restraint, contrasting with previous events.
Aerial footage showed Kanyike shot around 7pm on Moi Avenue, where protesters gathered.
Over 300 protesters were detained this week, with most released subsequently.
