A Coast based Accountant George Mokua made some accurate calculations to produce a sweet victory beating a team of 200 golfers at the Par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club Course in Mombasa County on Saturday.
The home player handicap 24 Mokua who is an immediate Past Chairman of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) was all smiles seeing him at the finish podium after being declared the Overall winner of the Britam Golf Circuit.
However, it was not an easy victory since Mokua closed the day’s event with an excellent count back score of 43 points to claim the title displacing handicap 20 John Middleton to the Men winner’s slot after both tied.
“A lot of practice, accurate calculations with my swings and putting actually made me the hero of the day. The weather was excellent and my team flight was fantastic making us enjoy our game in this excellent home course. Am now in good form and has been winning some events recently after playing golf for the last two and half years. I will defend the title next year, “said Mokua.

The 18 holes tournament that brought Golfers from the Home Club, Sea front, Vipingo, Malingi, Diamonds Leisure, Staffs and guests of the Sponsor with Valid handicaps was also graced by Kenya’s Legendary Female Golfer Rose Naliaka who emerged the best gross winner on an eight over 79 grosses.
Raju Patel Playing off handicap 24 was the Men runners up on a count back score of 41 points after tying on the same score with handicap 26 Anand Patel who was third.
Naliaka was at it again claiming the Ladies title on 41 points, two points ahead of runners up placed handicap 24 Mary Kinaro while handicap 18 Johnson Wamunyua with 36 points and handicap 33 Nasihah Abdalla on 41 points were the Best Senior and Junior winners respectively.
Handicap 19 Edward Kuria carded a count back score of 36 points to win the Staff prize while handicap 15 Harrison Kariuki brought 34 points to walk home with the Guest prize.
The Invited Coastal Clubs winner on 38 points was scooped by handicap 27 John Mugo as handicap 42 Naveed Arif on 44 points and handicap 38 Diana Nthiwa with 39 points were the High Handicapper Men (Hc 28+) and High Handicapper Lady (Hc 36+) winners respectively.
Britam Holdings Plc Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Tom Gitogo said they had enjoyed the day , thanked the Club for hosting the tournament and promised to return next year.

Elsewhere at the Karen Country Club on the same day, the four-ball of Philip Wahome, Mike Njogu, Zack Koech and Steve Lokonyo returned a combined score of 119 points to emerge the overall team winners in the 12th leg of the KCB East Africa Golf Tour.
“We had a formidable four-ball today. We knew the competition would be tough considering the names that had registered for this tournament but we came prepared to win. Our first and second nines were excellent and we ensured to keep everyone in check since we played our golf in the morning. We will continue working together as we prepare for the grand finale, “said Wahome.
They beat their closest challengers Evelyn Otsuyala, Koki Muia, Epimach Maritim, and Cyllus Onyango who returned 110 points to win the team runners up slot in the tournament graced by 240 golfers.
Kyalo Nzioki returned a count back score of 44 points to claim the overall Individual winner after countback at the luscious 18-beating Cyllus Onyango to the Man winner slot after both tied on the same score.
The two top teams join other teams from Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Mombasa, Nyeri, Kericho, Kakamega, Mombasa, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Kiambu and Burundi that have booked their places in the Tour’s grand finale slated for December 6th, 2024.
The Lady winner on 40 points was Wairimu Maina while Ryan Ndegwa won the Junior category with 39 points after countback while Peter Ndichu on 39 points and Millicent Mello with 37 points were staff winner and runners respectively.
The tourney, which has reached over 1,500 participants so far, is set to grace Nyanza Golf Club for its 13th leg on August 17, 2024.
