Rihanna has confirmed that she and Chris Brown are a couple.

The Diamonds singer finally opened up about their reconciled relationship after months of speculation admitting: "I decided it was more important for me to be happy."

In an in-depth chat with Rolling Stone magazine Rihanna also admitted that to outsiders it might not seem like the best choice but they can't possibly understand what goes on behind closed doors for the couple.

She said: “I wasn’t going to let anybody’s opinion get in the way. Even if it’s a mistake, it’s my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I’d rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it.”

Rihanna, 24, also revealed that she believes they have both grown and moved on as a couple in the years since his vicious attack on her in 2009 which saw him convicted of assault.

She added: “We don’t have those types of arguments anymore. We value each other. We know exactly what we have now, and we don’t want to lose that.”

And the fiery R&B star was quick to make it clear that she won't take any bad behaviour from 23-year-old Chris lightly, but ultimately she trusts him and feels totally safe with him.

She said: “He doesn’t have the luxury of f***ing up again. That’s just not an option. I can’t say that nothing else will ever go wrong. But I’m pretty solid in the knowing that he’s disgusted by that. And I wouldn’t have gone this far if I ever thought that was a possibility.”

Chris was famously convicted of assault after he brutally beat her following a pre-Grammy Awards party in 2009.

He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to six months of community service and five years probation - which he is still serving.

The road to reconciliation for Rihanna and Chris began in March 2012 when fans were shocked after she released a remix of Talk That Talk album track Birthday Cake featuring vocals from Chris.

Then in August Rihanna appeared in a rare and emotional TV interview with US chat show host Oprah Winfrey which saw her break down and cry as she admitted that she was still in love with Chris.

She said: said: “We’re very, very close friends. We built a trust again and that’s it. We love each other and we probably always will. I think he was the love of my life.”

The couple were then spotted together on numerous occasions throughout September whilst Chris was still dating model Karreuche Tran.

The Don't Judge Me singer confirmed that he also still had feelings for his ex with a candid video which he posted online on October 5 where he confessed he loved both of the girls.

He subsequently ended his romance with Karrueche and kicked off a spiral of are they or aren't they rumours regarding the state of his relationship with Rihanna fuelled by a series of cryptic tweets and intimate snaps posted online by the pair throughout recent months.

The couple also duetted on a romantic track on her No1 album Unapaologetic titled Nobody's Business.

Lyrics in the chorus of the tune include: "Always be my boy, I'll always be your girl, and it ain't nobody's business, just mine and my baby."

They were then seen to spend both Christmas day and New Years Eve together despite on going reports of trouble already surfacing between the pair when Chris was also seen partying with ex-girlfriend Karrueche.

However Rihanna quashed any doubts about their feelings for each other when she uploaded the artwork for her latest single Stay to her Twitter page two weeks ago.

She is seen nuzzling her face in to his neck on the front cover of the heartfelt ballad which includes the lyrics : "Round and around and around and around we go, not really sure how to feel about it, something in the way you move, makes me feel like I can't live without you, it takes me all the way, I want you to stay."
