Gangsters on the run after killing civil engineer

Detectives are investigating the brutal killing of a 28-year-old roads engineer attached to the Kirinyaga County Government.

Alex Mariera was killed by criminals who put his body in the boot of the family car in Kiti estate, Nakuru town before fleeing in his car, a black Toyota Fielder registration number KCC 721P.

Detectives said the criminals had expressed interest in buying the car which Mr Mariera had advertised on the OLX website.

The officers said the criminals visited his parents' home in Nakuru where the vehicle had been parked ostensibly to do a road test.

However, the criminals forcefully took over the vehicle, killed Mariera and bundled him in the boot of the family vehicle before fleeing.

"The deceased directed the criminals to his home where they picked the vehicle and were later expected to conduct a transaction only for them to kill him," said the officer.

He said they also carried his mobile phone and dumped it in Lanet.

Mariera's father Francis Misonge Mariera said his son had told him he had met willing buyers.

"My son travelled from Kirinyaga to Nakuru on Wednesday to pick the logbook to his vehicle after he said he had found buyers who were to pay him Sh950,000," said Mr Mariera.

He said the deceased arrived in Nakuru on Thursday around noon and picked the vehicle that was in the family parking bay together with the suspects who posed as buyers.

He drove the family vehicle while the suspects drove his vehicle.

The deceased's mother Lucy Mariera said after picking the vehicle, she tried to reach him via his mobile phone without success.

"We had been communicating with my son but after picking the logbook and the vehicle, he did not answer my calls. The phone was later disconnected," Mrs Mariera said.

Mrs Mariera said she went home at around 7pm and found the family vehicle  locked and abandoned along the road, a few metres from their house.

After unsuccessfully trying to open it, she reported the matter at the Teachers Police Post.

When the boot was opened, the mother was shocked to see the body of her second-born son stashed inside. His head was covered in a polythene bag while his neck was tied with a rope.

Mariera was among a team of engineers that are developing a manual to decongest urban areas.
