Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST RFC) has been the surprise package of the 2024 National Sevens Circuit, and they are not looking to slow down anytime soon.

After a stellar performance at the Dala Sevens in Kisumu, where they reached the semifinals for the first time this season, MMUST is keen to build on that momentum as they head into the Kabeberi Sevens, the fourth leg of the series, which kicks off on Saturday at the RFUEA Grounds.

MMUST’s journey in the 2024 circuit has been nothing short of remarkable. They struggled in the opening two legs, the Christie Sevens and Kakamega Sevens, where they failed to make a significant impact.

However, the team made significant adjustments heading into the Dala Sevens, which saw them defy the odds and reach the semifinals.

Their spirited run was halted by Kenya Harlequin in the third-place playoff, where they narrowly lost 22-17, finishing fourth overall.

The impressive performance at Dala Sevens has lifted MMUST to sixth place in the overall standings with 39 points, a significant improvement from their earlier position.

Speaking about their recent success, MMUST head coach John ‘Papa’ Asila attributed their turnaround to a renewed focus on teamwork, discipline, and tactical adjustments that allowed them to compete with the best teams in the circuit.

“We made a conscious effort to address our weaknesses after the first two legs. The boys responded well to the changes, and their hard work paid off at the Dala Sevens,” said Asila.

“Our target at Kabeberi Sevens is to continue this upward trajectory. We believe in our abilities, and we’re aiming for nothing less than another strong performance.”

Asila highlighted that one of the key factors that worked for them at Dala was their improved defensive structure, which allowed them to shut down some of the more potent attacks in the competition.

The coach also praised his players for their resilience and never-say-die attitude, which saw them pull off crucial victories against more established teams.

Looking ahead to the Kabeberi Sevens, Asila mentioned that the team has made further adjustments to their game plan to ensure they can continue competing at the highest level.

“We’ve been working on our decision-making under pressure and ensuring that we stay composed in critical moments of the game. The competition will only get tougher, but we’re ready for the challenge,” he added.

MMUST finds themselves in a tough Group D at the Kabeberi Sevens, alongside KCB Rugby, Mwamba, and MKU Thika. KCB Rugby, currently third in the standings with 45 points, will be the biggest challenge for MMUST, given their pedigree and consistent performances in the circuit. Mwamba, though 14th on the log with 9 points, and MKU Thika, a team looking to make their mark, cannot be underestimated.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Group A sees log leaders Kabras Sugar paired with Nakuru RFC, Strathmore Leos, and Impala RFC. Group B features Menengai Oilers, Catholic Monks, Stallions Rugby, and Kisumu RFC, while Group C includes Kenya Harlequin, Nondies, Daystar Falcons, and Blak Blad.
