Kisumu RFC is gearing up for an improved performance this weekend as the third leg of the 2024 National Sevens Circuit, the Dala Sevens, kicks off on Saturday at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu.

The home side is eager to make a strong showing in front of their supporters after a disappointing start to the season.

Currently sitting second-last in the National Sevens Circuit standings with just two points, Kisumu RFC has struggled to find form in the opening legs of the circuit.

In both the Kakamega Ingo Sevens and Christie Sevens, Kisumu reached the 13th place semifinal, only to lose out on both occasions.

The Dala Sevens presents an opportunity for Kisumu to turn their season around, but they will face stiff competition.

Drawn in a tough pool, Kisumu will need to be at their best to compete against the hard-hitting Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Kabete Stallions, and Christie Sevens champions, Kabras Sugar.

Kisumu RFC head coach Oscar Okaron believes the team has made significant strides during the break leading up to the Dala Sevens.

"The break has helped us work on more fitness and endurance, which has been our biggest challenge in most of our second-half games," Okaron said.

"Dala Sevens will be our home tournament, and we expect massive improvement from the other two tournaments. Playing in front of our fans, friends, and family will boost the team's energy."

The Dala Sevens, being Kisumu's home tournament, carries additional significance for the team.

With the support of the local crowd, Kisumu RFC is determined to make a mark and climb up the standings.

Meanwhile, Dala Sevens, has received a significant boost with a Sh3 million sponsorship from Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) through its Tusker brand.

Tusker’s sponsorship underscores the brand's commitment to supporting the sport and celebrating Kenya's sporting excellence.

Speaking at the sponsorship announcement, Tusker Brand Marketing Manager, Christine Kariuki, expressed pride in the partnership.

“Rugby holds a special place in the hearts of Kenyans, and we are thrilled to be part of the Dala Sevens. By supporting the growth of rugby in Kenya, we celebrate the incredible talent and passion of Kenyan athletes. We are confident that our sponsorship will contribute significantly to the success of this tournament.”

While receiving the sponsorship on behalf of Kisumu RFC, former chairman Gideon Kidenda expressed his gratitude to KBL for their generous sponsorship and support.

Dala Sevens follows the first two legs of the National Sevens Circuit, the 2024 Ingo Sevens and Christie Sevens.

Pools for the tournament have already been released, with 2024 Ingo Sevens Champions and Christie 7s runners-up, Kenya Harlequin, headlining Group A alongside Menengai Oilers, Strathmore Leos, and Mwamba RFC. KCB RC, drawn in Group B, will face off against Nondescript RFC, KU Blakblad, and Homeboyz RFC.

In Group C, Ingo Sevens third-place winners Kabras RFC will battle it out with MMUST, the spirited Stallions, and tournament hosts Kisumu RFC. Meanwhile, Nakuru RFC, Catholic Monks, Daystar Falcons, and Zetech Oaks complete Group D in the Division One category.

In the Division Two category, Ingo Sevens runners-up Kabarak University top Group A, joined by KCA University, Western Bulls, and Tororo RFC. Group B features Sigalagala National Poly, Northern Suburbs, Bungoma RFC, and MKU Thika.

Group includes TUM Marines, AP Warriors, Vihiga Granites, and Nandi Bears, while Group D has Embu RFC, Homabay Rugby, Mbale RFC, and Siaya. The final pool comprises Shamberere TTI, NYS Spades, Mean Machine, and Kifaru RFC. Standby teams are Makueni RFC, Kisumu Polytechnic, and Molo RFC.
