Rugby fans and players in the country will have to wait longer for action after the Kenya Rugby Union announced on Friday that the Kenya Cup resumption has been postponed.
Kenya Cup announced through their social media Twitter handle that the games scheduled to be played on Saturday, June 12 have been moved to next week.
Kenya Cup said the main reason was to honour rugby legend Benjamin Ayimba who was laid to rest on Friday at Uranga in Siaya County.
“In honor of departed Kenyan rugby legend Benjamin Ayimba, fixtures set forJune12 are postponed. League action resumes on Saturday, June 19,” read the Kenya Cup tweet.
Two Kenya Cup matches were scheduled to be played on Saturday with Strathmore Leos facing Kenya Harlequins and KCB playing Top Fry Nakuru.
MMUST, Nondescripts. Impala, Kabras, Blak Blad, Mwamba and Oilers were all given a rest.
Ayimba died on May 21 while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital for cerebral malaria.
Ayimba was arguably the most successful Kenya Sevens coach having guided Kenya to their maiden victory in the World Rugby Sevens Series with victory at the 2016 Singapore Sevens.
The team hammered Fiji 3-7 in the final, their only main cup victory in the World Series to date.
Ayimba, a Maseno School alumnus, also captained Impala Saracens, Kenya sevens and Kenya 15s national teams over a trophy-laden period.
