Kenyan driver Chager wins 2022 East African Safari Classic Rally

Star driver Baldev Singh Chager is the winner of the tenth edition of the East African Safari Classic Rally (EASCR) that ended in Watamu on Friday.

The multiple Kenya National Rally Championships winner clocked 16:40:10.6 after the final Stage 24 to win the nine-day contest after taking a consecutive lead for eight days.

Patrik Sandell of Sweden clocked 16:47:54.5 to eclipse Hall of Fame legend Ian Duncan from second place.

Duncan settled for third in 17:12:12.4.

All the 48 drivers have been on the road for the last nine days, battling fiercely for the top gong that will be rewarded this afternoon at the pristine Ocean Sports Hotel in the coastal town.

Kabras Sugar Racing ace Baldev Chager has been clinging on the lead for seven days running.

Chager has made history in the toughest motorsport showpiece in the globe with his remarkable consistency.

On Thursday, he widened his lead, from seven minutes to 12, between him and second-placed, compatriot, Ian Duncan after he clocked 15:11:44.9 in the last stage 21.

Defending champion Kris Rosenberger of Austria finished seventh and American YouTube sensation Ken Block 16th.

Other Kenyans in the top ten include Lee Rose and Douglas McNeil (fourth), Piers Daykin (fifth) and Gavin Laurence (ninth).

Speaking to Standard Sports after Chager’s win, Standard Group PLC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Orlando Lyomu said that the company will continue partnering with East African Safari Classic really fraternity to support the sport.

“We (Standard Group) are proud to partner with East African Classic Safari rally to cement our position as a true home of sports, " said the CEO.

Lyomu spoke at the Ocean Sports Resort at the end of the 10th anniversary of the East African Safari Classic rally.

On his part, Chager said;  “I am happy to have won the rally. It was an amazing drive. I want to thank my crew and the sponsors for contributing to my success. This was a big boost as I prepare for the World Safari Rally in June."
