Preparations are in top gear for the third edition of Homa Bay County's annual Genowa Governor's Cup, a multi-sport grassroots tournament that has become one of the region's most significant events.

The competition, which began on November 16, features football, netball, and volleyball matches across all wards in Homa Bay County, with the finals slated for December 26 and 27 at the iconic Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.

The tournament, known for its vibrant display of local talent, aligns with Governor Gladys Wanga's vision of using sports to identify and nurture budding stars while fostering community cohesion.

In addition to the exciting matches, the competition offers significant incentives for participating teams. The winning team will take home a grand prize of Ksh1 million, with other participants receiving various rewards to encourage their efforts.

The Genowa Governor's Cup has also been a platform for community development initiatives, with notable projects accompanying this year's tournament.

During a visit to Obengle Primary School in Rangwe Constituency, progress on a borehole project was highlighted.

The multimillion-shilling initiative, launched earlier this year, will provide clean and safe water to the Kochia Ward community, boosting food security and promoting healthy living.

Governor Wanga and Odibets General Manager Dedan Mungai confirmed that the borehole project is complete and will be handed over to residents by the end of the year. Additionally, as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, 40 motorbikes have been donated to Boda Boda cooperatives across the county to enhance road safety and empower youth in the transport sector.

Betting firm Odibets has been unveiled as the tournament's title sponsor, with the competition now officially known as the Odi Genowa Governor's Cup. The sponsorship package includes kits for participating teams and cash prizes, solidifying Odibets' commitment to supporting grassroots sports development.

Odibets General Manager Dedan Mungai emphasized the company's dedication to nurturing sports talent and fostering community growth, while Governor Wanga expressed her gratitude for the partnership, noting its far-reaching impact on local communities.
