Rongai All Stars Queens triumph with Tujiamini win, breaking barriers in women's football

Rongai All Stars Queens have emerged as a formidable force in Kenya’s women’s football scene after clinching the prestigious Tujiamini Initiative Gold Award in the recently concluded South Rift Region nominations.

The team, known for its relentless determination and commitment to breaking down societal barriers, secured a Sh500,000 cash prize.

This funding will help improve the club’s facilities, including acquiring new equipment and enhancing their playing ground in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County.

The victory is a milestone for the club, which has been transforming the lives of young women through football since its establishment in 2013.

Head coach Daniel Kyalo emphasized the club's role in empowering players from underprivileged backgrounds.

"Training at the club not only helps them develop their athletic skills but also equips them to make positive life choices, steering clear of social challenges such as teen pregnancy, early marriages, and drug abuse," Kyalo said.

Rongai All Stars Queens have come a long way, starting in the National Super League and evolving into a powerhouse in women’s football.

The club has produced remarkable talent, including Rebecca Odato, who recently represented Kenya at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup with the Rising Starlets.

Rael Kamanda, one of the founding players, currently plays for Kenya Women’s Premier League side Zetech Sparks, showcasing the high caliber of talent being nurtured at the club.

The Tujiamini Initiative, which is run by DBA Africa in partnership with SportPesa, aims to provide equal opportunities for all athletes, with a special focus on promoting women’s participation in sports.

Joseph Steventon, Head of Business Development at DBA Africa, highlighted the initiative’s mission.

“Women’s football in Kenya holds untapped talent due to a lack of resources and exposure. Tujiamini seeks to bridge this gap and ensure excelling individuals receive the support they need to thrive,” Steventon stated.

Kamanda, who also won the Tujiamini Bronze Award for the Eastern and North Eastern regions, expressed her pride in the club’s achievements.

"We faced many challenges, including stereotypes in this male-dominated sport. But to see how far we’ve come brings me immense joy. I started playing alongside boys, which gave me the exposure needed to make the national team," she said.

As women's football in Kenya continues to grow, initiatives like Tujiamini are playing a vital role in empowering female athletes and fostering an inclusive sports environment. The future looks bright for Rongai All Stars Queens as they continue to challenge societal norms and inspire the next generation of footballers.
