Rogers Wasega: The rising star ready to light up Nairobi City Stars' Premier League campaign

Rogers Wasega Obusu, a promising young left-back, has his sights set on becoming a key player for Nairobi City Stars as the new season approaches.

After six months of intense training and acclimatization since joining from Laiser Hill Academy in February 2024, the teenager feels ready to make his mark in the premier league.

Wasega reflects on his initial challenges, noting the significant increase in training intensity compared to his high school days.

"At the beginning, training was somehow very exhausting because I was only used to light training. I experienced a whole new challenge due to the intensity compared to what I got in high school," he explained.

Since his arrival during the mid-transfer window, Wasega has been included in matchday squads against Shabana, Bandari, and Gor Mahia. Though he did not get to play, sitting on the bench offered him invaluable insights into the top-flight experience.

"Sitting on the bench in those games gave me a hint of what the top flight is all about. Even without getting to the pitch, you feel that it’s a whole new level and experience," he said.

He was also part of the squads for matches against Bidco United, Kenya Police, Tusker, Nzoia Sugar, and Kakamega Homeboyz.

Wasega's debut was eagerly anticipated in the penultimate game of the season against Sofapaka in Dandora, but an unfortunate cut finger from a broken glass prevented him from playing.

"During the final days of the season, I had adapted to the system but unfortunately I couldn’t get a chance to make that debut," he lamented.

Despite this setback, Wasega is confident and optimistic about the upcoming season. "I am now more than ready for the upcoming season. I believe I am going to be the main character in the team. Expect lots of assists from me," he promised.

Last season, 28 players featured for Nairobi City Stars, including nine top-flight debutants. Wasega was one of only two players, alongside goalkeeper Julius Ombacho, who did not get any playtime.

The debutants included defender Wycliffe Omondi, midfielders Brian Mzee, Abuyeka Kubasu, and Shem Odinga, forwards Robinson Asenwa, Gilbert Abala, Brian Mose Nyambane, and Yuto Kusaba, as well as goalkeeper Byron Owino.

Despite his lack of playtime, Wasega's commitment and determination have set the stage for what could be a breakthrough season for the young left-back.
