He grew up in Setubal, where his father (Jose Mourinho Felix) was a professional footballer for Vitoria Setubal and Belenenses – he earned one cap for Portugal and had a management career of his own that spanned 20 years, largely in the second tier of Portuguese football.

Mourinho had a professional career for a short time – playing under his father at Rio Ave and then Belenenses – before retiring to focus on coaching.
